MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology

Central Tejo was a thermoelectric plant, owned by Companhias Reunidas de Gás e Electricidade (CRGE), which supplied the entire Lisbon region with electricity. Built in 1908, its period of productive activity was between 1909 and 1972, although from 1951 onwards it was used as a reserve plant, producing only to supplement the energy supply of the hydro plants.

In 1975 it was declassified, leaving the production system. Over time, it underwent several modifications and expansions, having gone through continuous phases of construction and alteration of production systems. In a new phase of its existence, Central Tejo opened to the public for the first time in 1990, then as the Electricity Museum. After a new period of restoration work on its buildings and equipment, it reopened definitively in 2006.
